Elaine's Song

from Kirkcarrion by Takla Makan

/

about

Elaine in the song is Elaine Hutchinson. She is a fictional character from a book, the first part of a trilogy, by Anthony James called 'Stonetrance'. She is a major character in the story and is, for the most part, a very unpleasant person. She is greedy, selfish and arrogant, but successful in business and, because of that, somewhat wealthy. Dig a little deeper though and one will find she is also so very sad and lonely. That partly comes from being so unpleasant but also from her other talents that I shall simply describe as being not entirely normal. The vocalist in the song is essentially playing the part of Elaine and she is singing to, but unheard by, her runaway foster daughter.

Since the book is partly about the Northern Pennines, stone circles and the mystical Landlines, I chose to use samples of a local lithophone in the middle section of 'Elaine's Song'.
